What will I study over the two years?
Key Features:
- Structured Learning: The course comprises four units, covering topics like human physiology, pathology, microbiology, and anatomy. Students also explore areas such as health issues, scientific reporting, and disease treatments.
- Assessment Methods: Assessment is a combination of internal assignments and external examinations, providing a balanced approach to evaluating student understanding and skills.
- Practical Skills Development: Emphasis on laboratory techniques, data analysis, and scientific reporting equips students with essential skills for both academic and professional settings.
What makes a good Medical Science student?
A good AAQ Medical Science student is curious about the human body, diseases, and healthcare, and is motivated to apply scientific knowledge in practical contexts. They are organised, detail-oriented, and able to analyse data accurately. Strong research and laboratory skills, combined with critical thinking, help them interpret results and draw evidence-based conclusions. Enthusiasm, resilience, and a commitment to learning are essential for success in both theory and hands-on practical work.
Where could Medical Science AAQ take me?
An AAQ in Medical Science provides students with a strong foundation for a variety of higher education and career pathways. It supports progression to university courses in medical science, biomedical science, nursing, physiotherapy, and other healthcare-related degrees. It also prepares students for apprenticeships or entry-level roles in laboratories, healthcare settings, and research institutions. The qualification develops practical, analytical, and scientific skills that are highly valued in both academic and professional medical environments.
How will I be assessed?
The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) BTEC National in Medical Science (Extended Certificate) employs a combination of internal and external assessments to evaluate student learning.
External Assessment:
- Unit 1: Principles of Human Physiology, Anatomy, and Pathology (mandatory)
- Unit 2: Health Issues and Scientific reporting (mandatory)
These units are assessed through an external examination set and marked by Pearson. The assessment evaluates students’ knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and theories, terminology, definitions, and scientific formulae used in human physiology, anatomy, and pathology. It also tests the ability to apply knowledge and understanding in given contexts and to analyse and interpret scientific information. The exams will take place in summer time of years 12 (unit 1) and 13 (unit 2).
Internal Assessment:
- Unit 3: Practical microbiology and infectious diseases (mandatory)
- One optional unit from: Unit 4 – Diseases, disorders, treatments and therapies, Unit 5 – biomedical science and Unit 6: Human reproduction and fertility. This optional unit will be chosen towards the end of year 12 – all students take the same optional unit.
These units are assessed through Pearson Set Assignment Briefs (PSABs), which are set by Pearson and marked by your teachers at Oriel. The PSAB typically consists of multiple tasks and you will be prepared for them in lessons before you attempt the tasks for assessment. This assessment structure ensures a comprehensive evaluation of both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing students for further education or careers in the medical and healthcare sectors.
