Eco Schools Green Flag

Oriel High School now holds the Eco Schools Green Flag!

The Eco Group at Oriel have been working really hard to complete their application to become an Eco School. Being an Eco School is the perfect way to acknowledge, reward and celebrate the ecological achievements of young people. It demonstrates that their hard work is appreciated and it provides them with the confidence and motivation to continue actively engaging with environmental issues now and throughout their lifetimes. The group have begun to tackle this by looking at environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity, litter and plastic pollution. They completed a whole school audit on what we are doing well to reduce our foot print on this earth and raised the profile of the work they have been doing by producing posters to display around school, brighten up our school garden with vibrant art work and continuing to encourage others to save water by using reusable water bottles and to recycle their litter and crisp packets around school. We received some great feedback from the Eco Schools team which demonstrates the hard work the group have shown.

“This shows you have a confident Eco-Committee dedicated to maximising their impacts. We like how active your Eco-Committee was in communicating their Eco-Schools activity school-wide, including assemblies, communicating with the SLT, using your Eco-Board, posting on social media and the use of the mentor board. Your Eco-board especially is incredibly visual and engaging and promotes your work in a very attractive way. This is really strong informing and involving and shows how valued and embedded the Eco-Schools programme is in your school.” Eco Schools Team

The groups work does not stop there. Over the coming weeks the group aim to deliver assemblies to share their ideas outlined in their action plan as well as creating flower beds around the school grounds to add a pop of colour and encourage further wildlife into area. We will also be leading a community litter pick and heading out into the Oriel Garden to plant some seasonal veg!

New Wall Graphics

Just after the Easter holiday the school was pleased that the start of our interior wall redecoration started.  We wanted design graphics that we felt were both high quality and relevant to the school. We think the wall art and stair graphics are a big improvement to the areas of the school where they have been installed.

We remain committed to continuing to enhance our fabulous school building and grounds over the next few months with further projects in the pipeline.

Letter from the Queen

Oriel High student Connor, wrote to the Queen to send his well wishes and to see if he would receive a response.

Connor was hopeful that he would receive a reply but knew The Queen was busy preparing for her upcoming Platinum Jubilee. The arrival of the letter caused a buzz of excitement among Connor, fellow students, and staff at the school.  The student was delighted to receive a letter from Buckingham Palace, with a message from the Queen and an official stamp. The letter is now proudly displayed on Connor’s fridge.

Pastoral Coordinator at Oriel Justine Taylor said “We are all very proud of Connor for taking the time to write a letter to the Queen in his own time after school with us. “We are all delighted, especially Connor himself with her Majesty’s response. Connor will have this commemorative keepsake to cherish for many years to come.” Connor said “I was so excited to receive a reply from the Queen, I almost cried. I can’t wait to celebrate the jubilee now.”

Chicago – School Production 2021

Oriel High School Creative Arts Faculty is excited to open ticket sales for our production of Chicago.
It has become an annual tradition to hold our whole school musical, and it was disappointing that last year we were unable to do so. However, we are back with a bang and ready to stage our most ambitious performance to date.

Starring students from across all key stages both onstage and backstage, Chicago is a rollercoaster ride back into the roaring 20s of America. In a story of love, betrayal, murder and ambition, we follow Roxie Hart as she commits a terrible crime and then tries to use her new-found fame to become a superstar. Along the way she meets her idol Velma Kelly, and the fellow murderesses in the Cook County Jail, as they are looked after by the keeper of the keys Matron ‘Mama’ Morton. Roxie convinces her poor and neglected husband Amos to hire the most expensive lawyer in town Billy Flynn to Razzle Dazzle the courtroom and to get her off her murder charge and to make her a star.
We hope to see you come along to support our talented students in this long awaited production.
