Subject Overview

We aim to deliver Business and Economics as a worthwhile and enjoyable experience that is taught with passion and enthusiasm; preparing learners to become effective and ambitious business people.

Living in a world dependent on Business being successful to drive the global economy we aim to prepare learners for a lifetime of success within business organisations

We are a growing Department currently with access to four air conditioned ICT suites with full access to interactive whiteboards.

We believe as a team that is important that all students can:

  • Work individually and together in teams to explore and develop business ideas
  • Understand the moral, social cultural and emotional impact of businesses in the world we live in
  • Make informed choices regarding the economic impact of decisions by understanding the costs involved
  • Develop learners confidence in expressing their ideas to others and their own self esteem
  • Develop learner’s creativity and problem solving skills by being curious, showing initiative, ingenuity and resourcefulness.


KS4 – GCSE Business Studies

Students will study the AQA Business (8132).  This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course.

What Skills Students Develop?

While studying the first two units of this course students will learn a lot of new things:

  • Students will engage actively in the study of business in order to develop as effective and independent and as critical and reflective thinkers
  • They will use an enquiring, critical approach to distinguish facts and opinions, to build arguments and make informed judgements
  • They will develop and apply their knowledge, understanding and skills to a variety of issues in a range of local, national and global contexts
  • They will appreciate the range of perspectives of different stakeholders in relation to business and economic activities
  • They will consider the extent to which business and economic activity can be ethical and sustainable
  • They will appreciate diversity and recognise similarities and differences of attitudes and cultures in society


A Level Business Studies

A-level Business Studies helps students:

  • develop a critical understanding of organisations, the markets they serve and the process of adding value
  • be aware that business behaviour can be studied from the perspectives of a range of stakeholders
  • acquire a range of skills including decision-making and problem-solving
  • be aware of the current structure of business and business practice.

This ten unit course requires students to develop their ability to acquire a range of important and transferable skills including data skills, presenting arguments, making judgments and conducting research. This course has no coursework or controlled assessment.

KS5 BTEC Business Level 3

The BTEC qualifications in this specification have been developed in the business sector to:

  • provide education and training for employees in the business sector
  • provide business employees opportunities to achieve a nationally recognised level 3 vocationally-specific  qualification
  • provide full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the business sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Business
  • Provide learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

The core units students will study are:

1: Exploring Business: Encourage learners to research and learn about local, national and international businesses in different sectors. They should look at the key ingredients for business success – how businesses are organised, how they communicate, the characteristics of the environment in which they operate, and how this shapes them and their activities.

2: Developing a Marketing Campaign: The aim and purpose of this unit is to give learners an understanding of how marketing, research and planning and the marketing mix are used by all organisations. Learners will also need to be able to interpret and use data to suggest an appropriate marketing campaign for a business and justify why the campaign will suit the needs of the business.

3: Personal and Business Finance: Takes the form of a written examination to be taken over 2 hours.

Students will then study and complete further Units towards the Certificate, Sub-Diploma and Diploma in BTEC Business.
